The course explores problems of commodification. The central goals of the course are to explore what is—and what should be—for sale in the market, and to consider why a particular thing is or should be for sale. The course will provide a broad understanding of the primary theoretical models for determining what things should and should not be commodified. The course will then invoke this theoretical background as it explores several concrete problems of commodification, including sex, intimacy, racial and sexual identity, cultural practices, children, organs, medical procedures, domestic labor, and the environment. In each instance, the course will cover both the existing and proposed legal regimes as well as scholarly and policy-based considerations. The course format will primarily consist of discussion with occasional brief lectures, and will culminate in an original research paper and presentation.
