The Office of Career Services assists first year law students with exploring the myriad of opportunities open to them. The Office works closely with first year students starting in November throughout the remainder of the year to identify and assess summer opportunities and help them apply for and attain those positions. The vast majority of first year students obtain summer legal positions to gain legal experience and explore future options.
A wide variety of legal employers hire first year law students for the summer. Common legal experiences include positions with smaller and medium sized law firms, judges, government agencies, and public interest organizations. Some first year students also obtain positions with large law firms, professors or the law library, or corporations and businesses, while others choose to study abroad. Although many choose to remain in the Los Angeles area for the summer, first-year students at UCLA School of Law work in geographic areas throughout the state, country and world.
