Cancellation / No-Show Policy

Because interviews sponsored by the Office of Career Services are in great demand, it is essential that students keep their interview appointments. Missing interviews or failing to cancel them in a timely manner reflects poorly not only on the students, but alsoon the Law School as a whole. For this reason, students are required to observe the policy set forth below regarding the cancellation of interviews. This policy will be strictly enforced.

Last-Minute Cancellations

Please consult the applicable interview program materials for the allowed timeframe for cancellations. For example, for the Fall On-Campus Interview Program, a student may cancel an on-campus interview, without penalty, anytime up to 48 hours before the scheduled interview time by notifying OCS of the cancellation.  Any cancellations that are made outside the designated cancellation window for the interview program will be considered last-minute. Last-minute cancellations will be subject to the following:

First and Second Last-Minute Cancellations

The student must write and send a letter to the employer stating an apology and the reason(s) for canceling the interview. A copy of the letter must be submitted to OCS within 3 days of the canceled interview, and the student must see his/her Career Counselor or the Assistant Dean of Career Services within those 3 days. Furthermore, the student may not interview with any additional on-campus employers until OCS receives a copy of the letter to the employer and the Assistant Dean of Career Services has approved additional interviews.

Third Last-Minute Cancellations

The student must follow the same procedure set forth regarding first and second last-minute cancellations. However, the student will not be permitted to participate in any further interviews through that particular interview program, i.e., if the cancellation occurs during the Fall On-Campus Interview Program (OCIP), the student will not be permitted to participate in any further interviews during that Fall OCIP. In the event that OCS does not receive a copy of the letter to the employer within the required 3 days, the student will not be permitted to participate in any further interviews through any other OCS-sponsored interview program, or through Public Interest Career Day, for the duration of the academic year. This includes Fall and Spring OCIPs as well as any job fairs sponsored or co-sponsored by OCS.

Approved ways to cancel interviews may vary for each interview program. Please consult the materials and Frequently Asked Questions for each particular program.  

No-Shows

A student will be penalized for failing to show up for interviews set-up through OCS if he/she does not give notice to OCS regarding his/her plans to cancel the interview. If the interview is not canceled prior to its scheduled time, the student will be considered a no-show and subject to the following:

The student must write and send a letter to the employer stating an apology and the reason(s) for missing the interview. A copy of the letter must be submitted to OCS within 3 days of the missed interview, and the student must see the Assistant Dean of Career Services within those 3 days. In addition, the student may not participate in any further interviews through that interview program. In the event that OCS does not receive a copy of the letter to the employer within the required 3 days, the student will be barred from participating in any further interviews through Public Interest Career Day and any OCS-sponsored or co-sponsored interview program for the rest of the academic year.

Please note the following rues, which apply to both last-minute cancellations and no-shows:

  1. If OCS does not receive a copy of the letter to the employer within the required 3 days following the interview, in addition to any other applicable penalties, the student will be referred to the Dean and a letter will be placed in the student’s permanent file regarding the incident.
  2. A student may not circumvent the cancellation requirements by providing a substitute for the interview slot.
  3. Exceptions to the last-minute cancellation and no-show policies will be at the sole discretion of the Assistant Dean of Career Services and will be granted only in the event of compelling circumstances.
