UCLA School of Law Appoints Policy and Special Programs Director of the Resnick Program for Food Law and Policy

LOS ANGELES, CA, December 9, 2013 – Kimberly Kessler, whose food policy background includes extensive experience working on issues of nutrition, food access, and food system sustainability, has been named the policy and special programs director of the Resnick Program for Food Law and Policy at UCLA School of Law.
Prior to joining the law school, Kessler served as the Food Policy Coordinator for the City of New York, an appointed position in the Mayor’s Office. In this role, she oversaw municipal food policies and initiatives to advance the Bloomberg Administration’s food policy goals, including initiatives related to improved retail access to nutritious foods, urban agriculture, healthy food procurement, and combating obesity.
“We are extremely pleased to welcome Kim Kessler to UCLA School of Law,” Michael Roberts, executive director of the Resnick Program for Food Law and Policy, said. “Her food policy background, including her work in New York to increase access to healthy, affordable food, and her management experience, will be tremendous assets as we work toward reforming food law and policy for the benefit of the consumer.”
Kessler was previously an associate in the New York office of Debevoise & Plimpton LLP. She received an A.B. degree in Political Science from Brown University and a J.D. degree, magna cum laude, from New York University School of Law. During her law school career, she was elected to the Order of the Coif, was awarded the Anne Petluck Poses Memorial Prize in recognition of outstanding work in a legal clinic, and served as assistant articles editor of the Journal of Legislation and Public Policy. From 2005 to 2006, Kessler clerked for the Honorable Victor Marrero of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

The Resnick Program for Food Law and Policy was established in 2013 by a $4 million gift from the Resnick Family Foundation. The program is dedicated to studying and advancing law and policy solutions to improve the modern food system. A national think tank at UCLA School of Law, the Resnick Program develops key legal and policy research and tools to foster a food system—from the farm to the fork—that is healthy both for consumers and the environment.
