L-R: Jillian Rickard, Alexandra Morris, Tal Kapelner, Brandon Milostan and Sam Lehman
Continuing to foster student relationships with alumni working in the entertainment law space, the Ziffren Center hosted its second annual One Year Out panel on Sept. 13. This panel featured five alumni from the class of 2017 discussing their career paths in entertainment law.
The panelists included Tal Kapelner (Global Road Entertainment), Sam Lehman (Latham & Watkins), Brandon Milostan (Greenberg Glusker), Alexandra Morris (Warner/Chappell Music), and Jillian Rickard (H Collective). The panelists emphasized the practical insights they gained from UCLA Law’s entertainment law curriculum, including experiential learning programs like the Sports Law Simulation. Skills they learned in these classes have been helpful in the beginning of their careers, they said, and they especially encouraged students to focus on developing their skills in drafting and negotiation.
While they emphasized the importance of building a professional network through internships and externships, the panelists also alluded to the value of building a network with fellow students. Rickard and Morris both stated that employers want to hire people they already know, and advised students to leverage the available internship and externship opportunities. Conversely, Kapelner candidly said that he never would have found his job had he not been connected with fellow students in law school. The candor of the panelists was well-received by the students, who also grilled the panelists on their day-to-day work and lessons learned early in their early careers.
Following the panel, students attended a networking reception with the panelists and other alumni from the classes of 2017.
