Manel Kappagoda oversees Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) Initiatives at ChangeLab Solutions in Oakland, California. She also serves as the Deputy Director of the National Policy & Legal Analysis Network to Prevent Childhood Obesity (NPLAN) which is housed at ChangeLab Solutions and funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Since 2007 NPLAN has provided legal and policy technical assistance on obesity prevention strategies to hundreds of communities nationwide. Before joining ChangeLab Solutions she worked as a public interest attorney focusing on healthcare access for low-income clients. Her areas of expertise include using legal strategies to reduce the marketing and consumption of junk food and beverages and using policy to address the inequities that cause disparities in obesity rates among different populations. She will discuss current and emerging policies to address childhood obesity rates including California Senate Bill 1000, the soda label warning legislation introduced by Senator Monning last month and the USDA’s proposed regulations that address junk food marketing in schools.
