2019 TRINA GRILLO RETREAT
“Resist and Recharge: Sustaining Social Justice Lawyering”
21st Annual Trina Grillo Public Interest and Social Justice Law Retreat
Co-hosted by Southwestern Law School and UCLA School of Law
March 15-16, 2019 at UCLA School of Law
What is the Trina Grillo Retreat?
Every year, the Trina Grillo Retreat brings together public interest-minded law students, faculty and practitioners to learn from each other, explore career opportunities, and formulate strategies for social justice. The Retreat is also a unique opportunity to build a robust public interest network across California and other west coast law schools, a network that participants will continue to build on over the course of their careers.
The Society of American Law Teachers (SALT) established the Retreat to honor the memory of Trina Grillo (1948-1996), a former professor at University of San Francisco School of Law and Santa Clara Law School who was a dedicated social activist and justice advocate. The Retreat embodies the aspirations of Professor Grillo’s work against injustice, in its many forms, and towards diversity and equality.

Why should I attend?
This year, the Retreat theme is “Resist and Recharge: Sustaining Social Justice Lawyering”, recognizing that in an era of significant challenges to vulnerable communities, public interest advocates are also struggling with sustaining themselves – emotionally, physically, financially – for the long haul. The 2019 Retreat will explore ways for future and current lawyers to successfully engage in sustainable, social justice-oriented careers. Planned sessions currently address topics, such as:
- Practicing mindfulness and self-care as social justice advocates
- Managing primary and secondary trauma in public interest lawyering
- Lessons learned and unique challenges in key practice areas (e.g., immigration)
- Charting an individual public interest path (postgraduate fellowships, starting a nonprofit or law practice, etc.)
- Exploring the value of judicial externships and clerkships in public interest careers
- Channeling creative arts in pursuing justice
- Practicing public interest through pro bono
