On Sunday, August 9, 2020, an election was held in Belarus. The incumbent, Alexander Lukashenko, fraudulently claimed victory, saying he had secured 80% of the vote. Since then, Belarusians have been out on the streets protesting the election results and have been met with violence from state forces controlled by Lukashenko. Many people have been detained and there are reports of torture, sexual violence, and other horrific conditions. On September 23, 2020 Lukashenko was inaugurated at an unannounced ceremony. Join us for a conversation with three Belarusian experts as we discuss the history of the Lukashenko regime, what happened during the election, subsequent human rights and rule of law violations, and what might come next for Belarus.
