​The U.S. Supreme Court is presently considering whether the Constitution permits states to abolish the insanity defense. Join a discussion on mental defenses in the criminal law with Amy-Hannah Broersma, a recently retired Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney, and Professor Richard Re. Topics will include the legal and practical issues that arise when the mental health of a criminal defendant is at issue, from the decision whether to prosecute through resolution by jury trial, as well as the pending Supreme Court case Kahler v. Kansas.
