LAW 662A/B - Advanced Copyright: Garcia v. Google and its Impact

This seminar will confront the myriad issues posed by the recent case of Garcia v. Google. A bit-part actor became subject to an Egyptian cleric's fatwa after her role in Innocence of Muslims was altered by dubbing her lines with scandalous accusations.  As a result, she filed multiple take-down notices, followed by a lawsuit for copyright infringement against the world's foremost Internet portal. The sessions will examine in detail the numerous copyright doctrines that rose to the fore in that case, from first amendment protection to scope of implied licenses to whether a third-party's death threat implicates "irreparable harm" of an infringement variety.

Pre- or co-requisite: Copyright or Intellectual Property Law.
