Nicole van Zyl is a 2018-19 UCLA-Sonke Health & Human Rights Fellow, slated to earn her LL.M. from UCLA in 2019. She completed her LL.B. at the University of Cape Town in 2016, and a Master’s degree in Criminology, Law and Society from the same institution in 2017. Since earning her LL.B., she has tutored students in Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, and the Law of Evidence at the University of Cape Town, in addition to providing mentoring and additional academic support to students. During her time teaching, she conducted research and wrote about legal issues surrounding the sexual grooming of children. Van Zyl is primarily interested in issues of criminal defense, penal reform, and the socio-economic rights of persons re-entering communities after incarceration.
