New Data on Sexual Minority Adults and Youth Behind Bars in the United States

Using newly available data from surveys conducted in U.S. prisons, jails, and youth custody facilities under the Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 we report on incarceration rates of sexual minority men, women, and youth and some characteristics of these populations and their incarceration. Findings show a surprisingly high rate of incarceration, mistreatment, harsh punishment, and sexual victimization of sexual minorities.
