Professor Schwartz Quoted in a Salon Article on Role of Police Officers and Teachers in America

September 11, 2014 – Professor Joanna Schwartz was quoted in a Salon article on the elite treatment of police and mass firings of teachers in recent years.

Law enforcement officers employed by the forty-four largest jurisdictions in my study were personally responsible for just .02% of the over $730 million paid to plaintiffs in police misconduct suits between 2006 and 2011. Law enforcement officers employed by the thirty-seven small and mid-sized departments in my study paid nothing towards settlements and judgments entered against them during this period. Officers did not contribute to settlements and judgments even when they were disciplined, terminated, or criminally prosecuted for their misconduct.
