February 3, 2015 -- Professors Jill Horwitz and Allison Hoffman commented on Elizabeth Warren's bill to deter pharma wrongdoings in an Al Jazeera America article.
The bill is built around the notion that pharma wrongdoing “is a harm to sick patients, so we are targeting the money in some sort of diffuse way towards improving their lives,” said Jill Horwitz, a legal scholar and health policy expert at the University of California at Los Angeles.
“NIH funds research that pharma is not going to do,” said Allison Hoffman, a UCLA health care law and policy expert. “NIH funds things that meet social needs, things that might not be valuable in terms of profitability. You see gaps in important areas of research.”
