Professor George S. Georgiev commented in the Los Angeles Times and Baltimore Sun, as well as numerous other news outlets, on the move by the U.S. Department of Justice to block Tribune Publishing’s purchase of Freedom Communications, which owns the Orange County Register and Riverside Press-Enterprise. Tribune Publishing, the owner of the Los Angeles Times, was selected as the top bidder for Freedom Communications in a bankruptcy auction, but the Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit to block the deal on antitrust grounds.
As the Los Angeles Times reported, Professor Georgiev said the Justice Department's lawsuit indicates it believes it has a strong case:
“DOJ doesn't like to lose,” he said. “I think they have thought pretty carefully about this and they really believe they can prevail or at least extract significant concessions,” he said, such as agreeing to certain operating restrictions or selling off some assets.
