Professor Volokh Comments in Article Addressing Tech Investor’s Financial Backing of Wrestler Hogan in Case Against Gawker

May 25, 2016— Professor Eugene Volokh was cited by in an article addressing tech investor Peter Thiel’s financial backing in Wrestler Hulk Hogan’s lawsuit against the celebrity news and media website Gawker. In March of this year, Hogan was awarded $140 million in a privacy lawsuit against Gawker Media, which had published a sex tape Hogan had participated in. 

“In my experience the freedom to speak, in the view of most libertarians, is not unlimited,” wrote Professor Volokh. “If Peter Thiel is indeed backing the lawsuit, I assume that he thinks that disclosing a sex video without the participant’s permission is a violation of the participant’s rights – here, a right to privacy.”
