Professor Winkler Talks to The Trace about NRA’s Criticism of Clinton’s Proposed Prison Reform Efforts

June 6, 2016 – Professor Adam Winkler spoke to The Trace about the National Rifle Association’s criticism of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s prison reform proposal, which includes reducing or eliminating mandatory minimum sentences for prisoners.  The NRA, aligned with Republican presidential presumptive nominee Donald Trump who opposes sentencing reforms, is stirring fears that such reform will unleash hordes of criminals on the public.  Some Republicans, however, favor sentencing reforms. 

“The NRA has for decades invested in harsh sentencing rhetoric,” said Professor Winkler. “The GOP shift on criminal justice is a recent phenomenon. It may be that the NRA hasn’t accurately gauged its depth or breadth.”
