Professor Volokh Quoted in Boston Herald on Man Facing Charges After Posting Burning Mosque Cartoon

July 27, 2016—Professor Eugene Volokh was quoted in the Boston Herald in an article about a Massachusetts man who allegedly posted a cartoon depicting a burning mosque with the words “burn your local mosque” to the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center’s Facebook page. The post, which has been largely interpreted as a threat, prompted officials at the cultural center to alert the FBI.


“These statements are to be understood as a reasonable person would understand them,” said Professor Volokh. “I think a reasonable person would perceive this as a threat that he or his confederates would burn a mosque. If they show he intended for it to be perceived as a threat, it’s criminally punishable.”
