Following on the success of "One Year Out" held in October 2017, the Ziffren Center assembled a diverse panel of UCLA Law alumni from the Class of 2012 on March 12 to share their experiences practicing entertainment and media law.
The "Five Years Out" panel included: Naomi Beckman-Straus, a fifth-year associate at Mitchell Silberberg & Knuppe who recently became general counsel for the online fashion store Lulus.com; Daniel Matusov, Corporate Counsel at Amazon Studios; Kimberlina McKinney, Founder and Managing Partner of KL&C Partners; Joseph Rodriguez, Vice President of Business Affairs at Paramount Pictures; and Jamie Zagoria, Director of Business & Legal Affairs at Paramount Pictures.
Representing a variety of backgrounds, including BigLaw, boutique IP and music firms, the founding of one's own firm, the DGA, the PGA, and television and film studios, the panelists made several points clear: (1) there are many paths to the practice of entertainment and media law in LA; (2) career movement is not uncommon in the first five years; and (3) building relationships remains vital to entertainment jobs.
Panelists also advised students to: (1) nurture relationships with your classmates in entertainment law—it's a small world!; (2) explore structured internships while at UCLA Law to build relationships in the industry; (3) be prepared to adjust your career expectations upon graduation. Regarding that last point, many of the panelists agreed that one is unlikely to land the perfect job straight out of law school. Instead of focusing on finding that perfect job straight out of the gate, ask yourself this: will this job get me one step closer to where I want to be? If it does, take it!
Following the event, the Ziffren Center hosted a reception for UCLA Law alumni in entertainment law from the classes of 2012 to 2017, offering a fun and informal venue for current and former students to build relationships with those active in the field.
