Promise Institute Hosts ‘River of Gold’ Screening, Discussion

20181024 River of Gold

On Monday, October 22, the Promise Institute for Human Rights hosted a screening of "River of Gold," the disturbing account of destruction of Peru's Amazon rainforest in pursuit of precious metals, and held a panel discussion with the filmmakers. The event was the first in the Promise Institute's Human Rights Film Series for 2018-19.

In the film, journalists Ron Haviv and Donovan Webster, led by Peruvian Enrique Ortiz, bear witness to apocalyptic environmental destruction in the pursuit of illegally mined gold, with consequences on a global scale. The documentary also explores the impact of a massive intervention by the Peruvian government against the illegal mines. Narrated by Academy Award-winners Sissy Spacek and Herbie Hancock, the film was produced by the Amazon Aid Foundation.

After the screening, producer Sarah DuPont, photographer Ron Haviv and Justin Connolly from Human Rights Watch talked about the importance of sustainable mining and the HRW campaign #BehindtheBling, which is aimed at pressuring jewelers and the public to buy responsibly sourced gold.
