[EL] Accounts of campaigning

I have to concur with Mike on *All Too Human*, especially--and an earlier
author on the Caro work about Lyndon Johnson's 1948 race for senate. I
recommend that folks working in political communication read Stephanopoulos'
memoir.

A few others, since folks have thrown out some works about campaigns (since
we do campaign work for a living, naturally we also obsessively read about
political campaigns, ha ha):

Some of these have first-hand accounts from candidates, others do not.

*•Tricky Dick and the Pink Lady* is a good account of the 1950 Senate Race
in California between Richard Nixon and Helen Gahagan Douglas.
•*Tip O'Neill and The Democratic Century* by John Farrell contains some good
accounts of Several of Tip O'Neill's campaigns, particularly the Democratic
takeover of the Mass. General Assembly early in O'Neill's career. O'Neill's
autobiography, *Man of the House*, has additional accounts, but I prefer
Farrell's book for the electoral accounts.
•*Madam President* by Clift & Brazaitis has some good segments and
interviews with first-hand accounts from female candidates like Marjorie
Margolies-Mezvinsky, the late Geraldine Ferraro, and some others. A lot of
the content is dated because it was published prior to Hillary Clinton's
rise to power in her own right, but the stories from the ground on various
campaigns are excellent.
•*Chief Justice* by Ed Cary has great accounts from Earl Warren's
gubernatorial campaigns, as well as the 1948 presidential campaign from the
VP nominee's perspective.
•*Empire Statesman* by Slayton also has a good account of Al Smith's various
campaigns including his presidential run.

For more regional or statewide campaigns, *Allan Shivers: The Pied Piper of
Texas Politics* by Sam Kinch and Stuart Long has some interesting accounts
of his gubernatorial campaigns. I believe this is out of print, though.
Also, *Gavels, Grit, & Glory*: *The Billy Clayton Story* by Jimmy Banks
(probably also out of print) has interesting accounts of a rural legislative
race in the middle of the last century as well as a great picture of what it
is like to engage in an election for Speaker of a legislative body. Much of
the book, however, is dedicated to other Clayton issues, including his
indictment and trial on a corruption charge.
