"Why on earth would the Obama campaign ... cause confusion, by naming its
efforts Project Vote?"
1) The name choice was most likely an inadvertent mix up. Occasionally I
have seen election officials run local education or registratoin projects
which they call "Project Vote"...that fact likely explains how some staffer,
who didn't know the organizational landscape, came up with it. Plenty of
unreasonable people will read waaaay too much into this, but there's no
point in the rest of us doing so. In fact, I'm fairly certain that
President Obama would not have approved of using this name. Somebody just
messed up and choose a rather obvious possible name.
2) Although it happens less now, in the mid-1990s there was occaisionally
some confusion in the media over the names Project Vote and Project Vote
Smart.
3) I see the Washington Times article refers to Project Vote as Project Hope
a couple of times. : )
