I am no fan of an expansive interpretations of campaign finance law, but
isn't the problem here that a contribution is deemed to be "anything of value
made by any person for the purpose of influencing any election for Federal
office." There is certainly no doubt that buying Edward's mistress's
silence, during his campaign for President, was for that purpose. So why is
Scott Thomas so definitive that this was not a contribution, when he is a fan
 of expansive interpretations? Jim Bopp

You can read the indictment_ here_
(http://www.wral.com/asset/news/local/wral_investigates/2011/06/03/9679542/John_Edwards.PDF) . The _Washington
Post_
(http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/john-edwards-indictment-expected-today/2011/06/03/AGQwEuHH_story.html) _reports_
(http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/john-edwards-indictment-expected-today/2011/06/03/AGQwEuHH_stor
y.html) on the indictment.
I’m not at all sure that if Edwards is convicted that the campaign finance
charges will stick. There may even be constitutional issues.
I will be writing more about this, especially over at the _Election Law
Blog_ (http://electionlawblog.org/) . My blog is down right now, maybe
because of a surge of traffic from being linked by this NY Times _editorial_
(http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/03/opinion/03fri2.html) on the Virginia
contributions case.
