Colleagues:
A press release issued by Public Citizen opposing Sen. Coburn's proposal to ban public financing of party conventions is below. It includes a link to a useful and brief report on the history of financing the conventions.
Party Conventions Tarred by Special Interest Money, Not PublicFunds
Coburn Bill to BanPublic Financing Attacks the Solution
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Aproposal to ban public financing of political parties conventions should bedefeated because it would make presidential nominees and party bosses even moredependent on potentially corrupting corporate money to pay for their nominatingconventions.
“Coburn is ignoring thehistory of corruption that has plagued the party conventions by attacking thesolution rather than the problem,” said Craig Holman, government affairslobbyist for Public Citizen. “A good legislative fix would ban corporatefinancing of the conventions – now that would fundamentally change the natureof these events away from influence-peddling soirees and back to nominatingconventions focused on meaningful debate.”
