[EL] Open Secrets Chart

The Open Secrets chart Rick references below could be an exhibit by the plaintiffs in the Montana case currently pending before the Supreme Court.  Although there are additional charts on the post that demonstrate that one reason why the sudden shift is that the terminology and categorization of spending has changed in the past, the chart effectively demonstrates how significantly the pre-Citizens United statutory scheme suppressed speech and deprived Americans of information regarding who would represent them.

Of course, the rise in independent spending is also related to the fact that candidates and candidate committees operate under much stricter rules, often times making them spectators in their own elections.

This shows a continuation of that the trends I discussed in my Slate piece, "The Numbers Don't Lie: If you aren't sure Citizens United gave rise to the Super PACs, just follow the money<http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2012/03/the_supreme_court_s_citizens_united_decision_has_led_to_an_explosion_of_campaign_spending_.html>,  I used the same data from the Center for Responsive Politics.

The data are important in showing the indirect effects of the Citizens United ruling and subsequent court and FEC decisions.
