[EL] How to Fix [Individuals]

Rick's call for a panel of the disinterested misses the point that there is
no such thing as the disinterested in matters of politics and policy -- and
certainly no "disinterested" persons among the qualified pool of applicants
for Election Czar(s). (Start your own short list to quickly see my
point). This is basic James Buchanan, and Buchanan is correct.

There is, on the Right today, a continued criticism of the utopians, the
elites and the anointed, be it from Thomas Sowell, Mark Levin and countless
others. Sowell and Levin are to be separated from those on the right who,
in addition to believing in the State, have no belief in individuals:
Michael Gerson, David Brooks, and to some extent David Frum.

But Sowell and Levin do not eschew that an ideal is possible. They
recognize only that the ideal cannot be whatever can be achieved
collectively, *via* philosopher kings, election czars or a guardian
counsel. Their ideal is to permit individuals to pursue objectives through
shared cooperation, respecting individual rights in a civil society.
Whatever arises from that system is the "ideal" -- so far as an ideal
exists -- because the rights of individuals are respected. That our
standard of living and progress has steadily increased as rights are
respected is only icing on the cake.

This is the central premise of our Constitution. It is those who would
"fix it" dramatically that should warrant our attention.

Even in the matter of election disputes, it is far better to have opposing
forces in equipoise determine a close election -- R versus D as Rick puts
it -- than place the matter in the hands of "the disinterested." This
theme is rife throughout history. We know how each system turns out when
dynamism is placed in the hands of the disinterested.

As I have eluded to earlier, America's problem has not been a lack of
unity. Her problem is that the Brookses and Gersons of the Right, and
politicians influenced by them, have failed to provide the equipoise we
need -- to counterbalance the collectivism of the Left. This has caused
many of our problems.

The Constitution -- checks and balances, federalism, the Ninth Amendment,
the dispersing of power and placing it in competing hands -- is a stumbling
block on the road to statism, not liberty. It is the one premise on which
those attempting to "fix" the Constitution or maintain it agree.
