Michael,
So you're saying, voter ID should be excused because the ID requirement
makes people vote by mail, where there *really* is fraud.
Your argument sounds analogous to the freedom side in the campaign-finance
debate: All of these restrictions on candidates and parties are driving
speech to independent interests.
Except for this major difference: Having the independents speak was never
corrupting (or fraudulent). Seems that's where your warning about voter
fraud breaks down.
A downside to voter ID is not that it encourages mail fraud, as both can be
remedied. Now, if you'd like to couch your arguments against voter ID in
terms of disenfranchisement of the .... well, you fill in the blank, I'll
gladly listen.
