(Finally, something on this Listserv for cartophiles.)

The graphic on XKCD is great. I've always been perplexed why the "Parties" timeline linked to below doesn't acknowledge its source (as far as I can tell --- I could be wrong), which is "The Conspectus of the History of Political Parties," by Walter R. Houghton. (The "Mapping the Nation" web site lists the lithographer as William B. Burford.) Strange that the historyshots folks would simply write that it was "created by an unknown designer." Buying the reproduction is fine, and I recommend it, but you can buy the original book on ABEBooks. There's a ton of great stuff in there for the graphically and historically inclined. Well worth it.

Subject: [EL] XKCD infographic on Congressional ideology

I suspect there's only limited overlap between this list and the online geek-oriented comic XKCD, so I wanted to give let you know about the most recent offering from the strip: an overwhelmingly detailed infographic exploring the partisan and ideological makeup of the U.S. Congress over its history.
