[EL] Compilation of state constitutional provisions on elections

Prompted by Richard Winger’s inquiry, I am attaching a now somewhat out-of-date compilation that I did about ten years ago of provisions in state constitutions relating to voting and elections. I’ve shared this with a couple of people on the list already, and I can see no reason not to share it generally, especially if it will prompt someone to update it – there have been a lot of recent amendments to state constitutions in the area.

I used the compilation as the basis for a book chapter, “Voting and Elections,” in State Constitutions for the 21st Century: The Agenda of State Constitutional Reform (G. Alan Tarr and Robert F. Williams, eds.) (SUNY Press 2006). The chapter provides an overview of state constitutional regulation of the political process.

The compilation is in the form of a Word table, so it is text-searchable. It doesn’t include the text of the constitutional provisions themselves, but it does describe them briefly and cite to the relevant provisions. Richard, if you search for the word “party” you’ll find a lot of entries to get you started.

I hope this will be helpful to folks.

Best,

Jim

Subject: [EL] is anyone aware of any source that tells which stateconstitutions mention parties?

Does anyone know if anyone has ever gathered together information on which U.S. state constitutions mention political parties?
