    "F.B.I. Looking Into Allegations That McConnell's Campaign Was

NYT:
<http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/10/us/politics/fbi-looking-into-allegations-that-mcconnells-campaign-was-wiretapped.html?ref=politics>

    The Federal Bureau of Investigation said it was looking into
    allegations by Senator Mitch McConnell
    <http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/m/mitch_mcconnell/index.html?inline=nyt-per>
    of Kentucky that political opponents bugged his campaign headquarters.

    Mr. McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate, blamed the
    "political left" for an anonymous recording of a meeting at his
    campaign headquarters that appeared on the Web site of Mother Jones
    <http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2013/04/mitch-mcconnell-ashley-judd-secret-tape-senate>,
    a liberal magazine, on Tuesday morning. The recording captures Mr.
    McConnell and his aides outlining possible attacks on potential
    opponents, especially the actress Ashley Judd.

    Colorado Still Ground Zero in Voting Wars

Denver Post:
<http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_22989500/colorado-bill-offers-more-mail-ballots-election-day>

    Democrats are expected to introduce a sweeping elections bill
    Wednesday that would allow residents to register to vote through
    Election Day, and send mail ballots to every voter, according to a
    draft of the bill obtained by The Denver Post.

    The measure is expected to launch another partisan battle under the
    gold dome, as Republican leaders, including Secretary of State Scott
    Gessler, say the legislation would lead to voter fraud.

North Carolina
<http://www.wnct.com/story/21924600/bills-aim-to-change-voting-in-our-state-both-parties-fired-up>
may give Colorado a run for its money for partisan acrimony over changes
to election rules.

    "Inside Bush v. Gore" <http://electionlawblog.org/?p=49184>

I just received my advanced copy of former Florida Chief Justice Charley
Wells memoir
<http://www.amazon.com/Inside-Bush-Florida-Government-Politics/dp/0813044758>
of the 2000 Florida controversy. I blurbed this book and enjoyed it very
much. The one thing that's missing---by design--is any description of
the Court's internal deliberations during those fateful days when the
world did not know who would be the next American President.

    "Reid not ready to move on changing filibuster rule on nominations"

NBC
<http://nbcpolitics.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/04/09/17674713-reid-not-ready-to-move-on-changing-filibuster-rule-on-nominations>:

    Continuing an uneasy standoff with Republicans on filibusters of
    President Barack Obama's nominees to the federal courts and to
    executive branch positions, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid
    indicated Tuesday he isn't quite ready to pull the trigger on
    changing Senate rules to curb or abolish such filibusters.

    A move by Reid to change Senate filibuster rules by a simple
    majority vote -- sometimes called the "nuclear option" -- would
    spark a major battle with Senate Republicans.

NYDN
<http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dailypolitics/2013/04/debate-over-allowing-secretly-indicted-nelson-castro-to-twice-run-for-re-elect>:
"The decision by federal and Bronx prosecutors to allow government mole
Nelson Castro to twice run for re-election to the Assembly while
secretly under indictment has raised some eyebrows. Several lawmakers
and state government officials questioned whether the voters in Castro's
Bronx district were best served by not knowing their assemblyman was
indicted in 2009 on felony perjury charges in a voter fraud case when he
ran again in 2010 and last year."

    "FEC Stoops to a New Low, or a Mountain out of a Molehill?"

Posted on April 9, 2013 1:10 pm <http://electionlawblog.org/?p=49170> by

David Keating
<http://www.campaignfreedom.org/2013/04/08/fec-stoops-to-a-new-low-or-a-mountain-out-of-a-molehill/>:

    The Campaign Legal Center's Paul Ryan recently charged
    <http://www.clcblog.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=515:the-failure-to-enforce-commission-reaches-a-new-low>
    that the FEC stooped "to a new low" because the agency failed to
    hound a mysterious robocaller who allegedly spoke to voters without
    a disclaimer and perhaps failed to report the spending in an
    uncompetitive Republican Party primary. Ryan based these charges on
    Commissioner Ellen Weintraub's four page legal analysis
    <http://eqs.nictusa.com/eqsdocsMUR/13044331493.pdf> of the case.

    We don't know the reasons why the GOP Commissioners did not vote to
    pursue the matter. It could be that they simply decided it wasn't
    worth it.
