"Molly Ivins Was Wrong About the Texas Legislature"

Jason Stanford
<http://jasonstanford.org/2013/06/molly-ivins-was-wrong-about-the-texas-legislature/>:
"Molly Ivins rarely missed the mark, but she whiffed when she called
<http://womenshistory.about.com/od/quotes/a/molly_ivins_2.htm> the Texas
legislature 'the finest form of free entertainment ever invented.' Rick
Perry has called the Texas legislature into special session on
redistricting. That isn't free, and I have ceased to be entertained."

Who'd have thought we'd see another Texas mid-decade re-redistricting,
although this time without Tom DeLay asking the FAA to track down the
fleeing Democratic legislators seeking to deprive the legislature of a
quorum?

Bloomberg BNA
<http://news.bna.com/mpdm/MPDMWB/split_display.adp?fedfid=31815245&vname=mpebulallissues&jd=a0d9c6d6w1&split=0>:

Virginia businessman William Danielczyk was sentenced May 31 to two
years and four months in prison for illegally reimbursing $186,000
in campaign contributions made by straw donors to Hillary Clinton
    (U.S. v. Danielczyk, E.D. Va., Criminal No. 11-85, sentencing 5/31/13).
The sentence was among the toughest ever for campaign finance
violations but was less than the five years in prison recommended by
federal prosecutors (3522 Money & Politics Report, 5/30/13
    <http://news.bna.com/mpdm/display/link_res.adp?fedfid=31815245&fname=a0d9b5z0r4&vname=mpebulallissues>).
Prosecutors cited Danielczyk's efforts to cover up his crime in
submissions to the Federal Election Commission and obstruction of an
    FBI investigation.

Danielczyk's case was also significant because it presented the Supreme
Court an opportunity to reconsider its holding in /FEC v. Beaumont/,
which says it is constitutional to ban direct corporate contributions to
candidates.

WSJ
<http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324682204578517563566848922.html>:

At the same time the Internal Revenue Service was targeting
tea-party groups, the tax agency took the unusual step of trying to
impose gift taxes on donors to a prominent conservative advocacy
group formed in 2007 to build support for President George W. Bush
    <http://topics.wsj.com/person/B/George-W-Bush/5369>'s Iraq troop surge.

The probe of the group, Freedom's Watch, began in the unit led by
Lois Lerner, the IRS official already under scrutiny for her role in
the more recent targeting of conservative groups.

"U.S. Rep. Joe Garcia's staff chief implicated in ballot scheme"

Important /Miami Herald /report
<http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/05/31/3426745_miami-congressman-joe-garcias.html>:

Congressman Joe Garcia's chief of staff abruptly resigned Friday
after being implicated in a sophisticated scheme to manipulate last
year's primary elections by submitting hundreds of fraudulent
    absentee-ballot requests.

Friday afternoon, Garcia said he had asked Jeffrey Garcia, no
relation, for his resignation after the chief of staff --- also the
congressman's top political strategist --- took responsibility for
the plot. Joe Garcia took the action hours after law enforcement
investigators raided the homes of another of his employees and a
former campaign aide in connection with an ongoing investigation.

I think it is time for Florida to reconsider the use of no-excuse
absentee ballots.
