2013 Law Alumni Association (LAA) Annual Fall Conference: "The
    Future of Voting Rights"

The conference, co-sponsored by the NYU Law Alumni Association and
the Journal of Legislation and Public Policy, took place on
    Wednesday, November 13, 2013.

Voting is an inherent constitutional right that determines the
makeup of our government and the direction of our democracy.
Historically, many groups have fought economic, racial, and gender
barriers to secure this right. In the wake of the recent Supreme
Court ruling on Shelby County v. Holder that struck down criteria
determining which state and local governments could make changes to
voting laws or procedures, many have argued that vast groups voters
across the United States are now disenfranchised.

Join this expert panel as they explore the future of voting rights
in the United States --- are new regulations required or is the
United States finally at a point where the right to vote is
    guaranteed to all?

    Moderator: Professor Richard Pildes

    Panelists:
    - Robert Bauer
    - Julie Fernandes
    - Benjamin L. Ginsberg
    - Samuel Issacharoff
    - Dale Ho
    - Spencer A. Overton
    - Myrna Pérez

The end of the filibuster
<http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/21/us/politics/senate-democrats-poised-to-block-filibusters-of-presidential-picks.html?_r=0>
of judicial nominees Thursday?

What I think has changed in the last few years is the calculation on the
downside of going nuclear. How can Sen. McConnell plausibly threaten to
make things worse if Democrats go nuclear given how bad things are already?

Then again, the amount of dysfunction always seems to exceed my
expectations.

I should add, that if Democrats were bluffing, they'd have every
incentive to say "We're not bluffing."

BREAKING: "State high court to consider two voter ID cases"

Woah
<http://www.jsonline.com/news/statepolitics/state-high-court-to-consider-two-voter-id-cases-b99146859z1-232689791.html>:

The Wisconsin Supreme Court took over one voter ID case Wednesday
and said it would hear an appeal of another.

The move by the high court cancels oral arguments that were to be
held next month before the District 2 Court of Appeals in Waukesha.

Meanwhile, two other challenges to the voter ID law are being heard
in federal court in Milwaukee. A two-week trial in those cases
wrapped up last week, and U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman will
later issue a written ruling on whether the law is constitutional
and in keeping with the federal Voting Rights Act.

CPI
<http://www.publicintegrity.org/2013/11/20/13791/dark-money-groups-give-big-similar-nonprofits>:
"New Internal Revenue Service tax returns shed light on hefty
spending by key nonprofit groups on political campaigns and lobbying
--- and the disclosures also show that some of the money raised by
these groups, which aren't required to reveal their donors, are sharing
money with other groups that don't reveal their donors. This makes it
even more difficult to determine their ultimate funding sources."
