*Call for papers for 2014 Sydney conference*

*What*: Australian Political Studies Association Annual Conference
*When*: Sunday 28 September to Wednesday 1 October 2014
*Where:* University of Sydney
*Conference theme:* Elections, Democracies and Autocracies
*Details:* www.apsa2014.org

The Australian Political Studies Association welcomes panel and paper 
proposals that address the main theme of ‘Elections, Democracies and 
Autocracies’ from multiple disciplinary and methodological 
approaches. Proposals are welcome for the main theme as well as 
particular issues, which include (but are not limited to):

  * The role of the international community in strengthening elections;
  * The strengths and weaknesses of talk of 'international democracy';
  * Public policies regulating the conduct of elections, including
    electoral management bodies, political finance, and campaign media;
  * The role of 'flanking' institutions that nurture or disable
    elections, including the media, parties, the courts, parliaments,
    public monitoring agencies and regulatory bodies;
  * The challenges facing Australian elections;
  * The role of new information and communication technologies and
    social media in campaigns and electoral administration;
  * The challenges of social diversity and gender equality in elected
    office;
  * Normative theories about the role of elections in democracy;
  * The comparative study of elections in democracies and autocracies.

*Pre-AusPSA Research Workshops*
*Date*: 28 Sept. 2014
The workshops held before the main conference are designed to bring 
together scholars presenting research papers around a common topic, 
involving a sequential series of four panels during the day. Workshop 
topics include electoral integrity in the Asia-Pacific

the legal regulation of political parties
