Conference Announcement and Call for Presentations
Democracy in America: Participation and Social Justice
An interdisciplinary conference on the state of democracy in the United States
Stetson University, March 27-28, 2014
Keynote:
Peter Levine, Professor at Tufts University’s Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Affairs and Director of CIRCLE, The Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement
Featured Presenters:
Vanessa B. Beasley, Associate Professor of Communication Studies and Director, American Studies, Vanderbilt University
Wendy A. Bach, Associate Professor of Law, University of Tennessee College of Law
Robert Hackett, President, The Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation
The conference will address problems and solutions in the contemporary practice of democracy in the United States from a variety of perspectives. Special emphasis is being given to issues of access, forms of participation in governance, and social justice concerns.
We anticipate panels on the following topics: deliberative and participatory democracy, the political rhetoric of race, civic education and engagement, government accountability and social justice, and election law and voter suppression. Other panels will likely be developed. Although the primary focus of the conference is the contemporary United States, we are also seeking historical and cross-national counterpoints to include on the panels.
We are seeking a limited number of additional research presentations for the conference. If you have a research project that fits within these bounds, we encourage you to submit a proposal of 500-1000 words to present your research at the conference by December 15, 2013. The organizing committee will review the submitted proposals and will contact everyone submitting by January 15, 2014.
To submit a proposal to present or to register to attend, visit the conference website at
