"Politicians' Extortion Racket" <http://electionlawblog.org/?p=56158>

Peter Schweitzer NYT oped
<http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/22/opinion/politicians-extortion-racket.html?ref=politics&_r=0>:
"WE have long assumed that the infestation of special interest money in
Washington is at the root of so much that ails our politics. But what if
we've had it wrong? What if instead of being bribed by wealthy
interests, politicians are engaged in a form of legal extortion designed
to extract campaign contributions?"
See also this NYT article
<http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/22/us/politics/questions-about-politicians-use-of-leadership-pacs.html?ref=politics>
and a link to the book, "Extortion
<http://www.amazon.com/Extortion-Peter-Schweizer/dp/0544103343>."
I'll be interested to see how, if at all, this differs from Fred
McChesney's "rent extraction" theories.

Charles Lane on Judge Posner on Voter ID

"Some critics of voter ID laws may revel in Posner's confession. I wish
he'd kept his mouth shut. Not because I'm a fan of voter ID laws --- I'm
not --- but because Posner's casual mea culpa is improper behavior for a
sitting federal judge."
MORE:
It doesn't help matters that Posner's confession of error contained
a gratuitous slap at the losing lawyers or that it hinged on a vague
notion of how the Indiana law, and others like it, are now
"regarded." As it happens, opinion
<http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/poll-concerns-about-voter-fraud-spur-broad-support-for-voter-id-laws/2012/08/11/40db3aba-e2fb-11e1-ae7f-d2a13e249eb2_story.html>
polls
<http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2013/07/25/197687/marist-poll-for-mcclatchy-on-voting.html>
consistently show that voter ID laws are popular among voters of
both parties.
When I presented this data to Posner, he replied by e-mail, "That's
not my impression. I believe that all but one of the photo ID
identification laws were passed by state legislatures that are
Republican controlled."
He and I could debate this forever. But that's just the point ---
judges shouldn't engage in the hurly-burly of political argument. It
fosters the impression, corrosive to the rule of law, that there is
no difference between a judicial process and a legislative one.
