[EL] Cuccinelli: No conflict for AG's office to preside over election

I covered that campaign for the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Coleman’s refusal to resign as AG was a major issue. He lost to Chuck Robb by about 100,000 votes, just one year after President Reagan won the state by more than 200K and (if memory serves) carried every congressional district.
Virginians are unpredictable, or fickle, or perhaps both.

From Wikipedia, it looks like nine previous Virginia AGs have run for governor since the office was created in 1918, and eight of them resigned early in the election year. The exception seems to have been Marshall Coleman in 1981.

I used to work with a former Virginia AG who had resigned to run for another high-profile elected position. He told me that the tradition in Virginia was for the AG to step down if he was running for another job.
It seems this tradition has gone the way of many traditional things.
