With respect to Doug Johnson's "Let the public help draw voting districts", Micah Altman and I summarize the public mapping experiences in the last round of redistricting in this forthcoming article for the International Conference on System Sciences. Doug was probably not aware there are a few cases where maps drawn by the public -- by members of the public, not members of redistricting commissions -- affected redistricting processes.
