[EL] it's a fantasy, but the US would benefit from a national pop. vote on Obamacare

This is impossible in reality, but in my imagination I wish Congress would pass a quick bill for a national nonbinding referendum on Obamacare...say to be held in early spring 2014.  Of course there has never been a national referendum on anything in the U.S.  But if there were, it could defuse the issue for the short term.  If a majority of the voters voted to keep it, that would take away the legitimacy of Republican attempts to defund it; if a majority voted to repeal it, well, so be it.  And just knowing that a popular vote would settle the issue in about six months from now, then Congress could get its mind back on the things that Congress should be focusing on right now, such as immigration.

I don't see a constitutional barrier to having an advisory referendum across the entire nation, if Congress wanted to provide for such a referendum.  And I predict the voter turnout would be very high.
