    Pa Voter ID Case May Soon Go to State Supreme Court

News
<http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/harrisburg_politics/Judge-denies-Commonwealths-motion-in-voter-ID-case.html>
from Pa:

    A Commonwealth Court judge on Monday denied the Corbett
    administration's motion to reconsider his ruling overturning the
    state's two-year-old voter identification law.

    In his 29-page decision, Judge Bernard L. McGinley said the law
    requiring voters to produce photo ID at the polls failed "to provide
    liberal access to compliant photo ID" and as a result voters were
    disenfranchised.

    "The evidence showed the voter ID provisions at issue deprive
    numerous electors of their fundamental right to vote, so vital to
    our democracy," wrote McGinley, who struck down the law in January.

    The Corbett administration has 30 days to file an appeal to the
    state Supreme Court.

    An Odd Omission in NY Times Story on Senate Confirming Judicial
    Nominees: The Supreme Court <http://electionlawblog.org/?p=60949>

Posted on April 28, 2014 8:36 pm <http://electionlawblog.org/?p=60949>by
Rick Hasen <http://electionlawblog.org/?author=3>

The story
<http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/29/us/white-house-steps-up-effort-to-confirm-federal-judges.html>
begins:

    With the possibility that Republicans could take the Senate in
    November, the White House and Senate Democrats are working swiftly
    to confirm judges to the federal courts in an effort to allow
    President Obama
    <http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/o/barack_obama/index.html?inline=nyt-per>
    to leave a lasting liberal imprint on the judiciary.

How could such an article not even mention the Justice
Ginsburgretirement controversy
<http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/jurisprudence/2013/12/ruth_bader_ginsburg_s_retirement_stop_telling_the_supreme_court_justice.html>?
The issue is therefore not only that there could be a Republican
president in 2016 who could appoint a conservative in Justice Ginsburg's
place to solidify the position of conservatives on the Court. It is that
an Obama replacement of Justice Ginsburg in 2015 or 16 might end up
being not as liberal as someone who could get through the Senate before
the 2014 elections.
