    Reid
    <http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/r/harry_reid/index.html?inline=nyt-per>
has engaged in the greatest consolidation of congressional power
since Newt Gingrich ruled the House, unleashing a bitterness that
may derail efforts to extend unemployment insurance.

Mr. Reid of Nevada, the majority leader, on Thursday dismissed all
proposed Republican amendments to the unemployment extension, even
those drafted by Republicans who had handed Democrats a victory on
Tuesday by voting to take up the bill.

"Palmdale appeals court decision, says it won't hold new election"

Posted on January 9, 2014 8:39 pm

LA Times
<http://www.latimes.com/local/political/la-me-pc-palmdale-election-20140109,0,2971049.story#axzz2py1QR2sV>:

Palmdale officials this week appealed a trial judge's ruling that
their at-large elections violate the California Voting Rights Act
and said they will not hold new balloting in June.

Last month, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mark V. Mooney ordered
a new, district-based elections system for Palmdale and required
that it hold a special election in June to replace the city's
November at-large election. He also ruled that the current council
members could not stay in office beyond July 9.

The appeal automatically stays the order for a new election but not
the prohibition against current council members remaining in office,
thus adding to the confusion that has beset the city since the court
fight began over the elections system last spring.

My earlier coverage is here <http://electionlawblog.org/?p=57111>. And
here's audio

Two Republican lawmakers and a conservative legal group are
questioning the Justice Department's selection of a Democratic donor
to lead the agency's probe into the Internal Revenue Service's
targeting of certain advocacy groups during the 2010 and 2012
    election cycles.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) and Rep.
Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) issued a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric H.
    Holder

Jr. on Wednesday demanding the department remove DOJ trial attorney
Barbara Bosserman from the case, saying her involvement is "highly
inappropriate and has compromised the administration's investigation
    of the IRS."

Bosserman donated a combined $6,750 to President Obama's election
campaigns and the Democratic National Committee between 2004 and
2012, according to federal campaign finance records.
