I really appreciated this piece and I'm glad you sent it to this list. I
realized only recently that the Friedman view of the corporation depended
on the idea that the corporation was not the equivalent of a person and
only existed for the shareholders, whereas critics of that view (usually
considered more left), like Lynn Stout of Cornell, would argue that a
corporation is an independent entity with obligations of its own. I was
looking for a piece that would help me understand that debate and how it
related to arguments about corporate personhood stemming from Citizens
United and Hobby Lobby, and this was exactly what I was looking for.
