*FairVote Program Director*

*SUMMARY: WHY WE NEED YOU AND WHY YOU WANT THIS JOB*:

FairVote, a non-partisan organization, is one of the nation’s most
effective advocates for election and voting rights reform. We have a
history of effective research, prominent media, successful advocacy and
development of innovative ideas designed to make our local, state, and
national political systems work better. As detailed at FairVote.org and
summarized at Reform2020.com, our program work includes projects to: expand
consideration, adoption and effective implementation of ranked choice
voting and fair representation voting systems; enable voters in all 50
states choose America’s president in a national popular vote elections; and
promote policies that increase voter participation and the representation
of women and racial minorities in political office. We are encouraged to be
entering a period of growth as more people come to realize that the reforms
we focus on are necessary to build a more representative and fair
democracy. This fall we will have our largest staff ever, a dynamic Board
of Directors, and an annual budget that, for the first time, will exceed
one million dollars. We want you to help us keep growing in size and impact.

We seek an experienced program director to supervise our communication,
advocacy, research, and legal teams. Expertise in election reform or voting
rights policies is ideal but if you have great strengths in other areas,
please apply. We seek someone who will: work well with our frequently
on-the-road and in-the-media Executive Director; collaborate with the
Executive Director to determine FairVote’s response to news or unexpected
issues; make the most of opportunities developing in the field of election
reform; and provide day-to-day guidance and support for our staff, ensuring
they are as focused and productive in their work as possible. We are
looking for someone with great dynamism who can keep pace with new issues
that arise in the field of election reform and help FairVote determine the
best and most strategic responses to these issues.

*ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES*:

   - Help supervise the team of 12 staff and Democracy Fellows who make up
our research, communications, legal, and advocacy teams.
   - Work effectively with our Executive Director and Development Director;
in particular, on developing a short- and long-term vision for the highest
priority tasks and actions in our work areas and how to get them done on
schedule with modest involvement of the Executive Director.
   - Ensure that our communications work is getting the broadest possible
coverage through new and old media and helping each core program staff
develop a media presence that amplifies the voice of the organization.
   - Guide staff efforts to develop and complete on schedule the research
reports and other analyses that are the key ingredient in our ability to
   catalyze electoral reform.
   - Represent FairVote in coalitions, public meetings, hearings, press
events, conferences, and public events as needed.
   - Help identify key vacancies to fill during future growth and manage
the recruitment process. Recommend, review, and approve employment actions,
including interviewing, hiring, promotions and raises, and the handling of
   disciplinary issues.
   - Develop and recommend program budget allocations.
   - Play a role in making sure our office is a great place to work and
where all staff members and interns are respected and valued.
   - Be creative and nimble.
   - Give staff the support and regular coaching they need to develop
mastery of their field and continue to be challenged by our work.

*QUALIFICATIONS*:

   - Overall qualifications: An equivalent combination of education and
experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific
education and experience listed below. In part, we will tailor the specific
job duties to match the skills of the right candidate.
   - Education: Law degree or advanced degree in political science,
nonprofit management, communications, business, and/or social science.
   - Experience: 4+ years of being increasingly responsible for small
high-capacity teams, including management/supervisory experience. Other
relevant experience with public policy, elections-related advocacy,
legislative work, grassroots organizing, communications, and/or development.
   - Electoral reform experience is as plus: Our priority work includes
campaigns to expand voter turnout and the representation of women and
racial and political minorities, reform the Electoral College, and secure
the adoption of ranked choice voting and fair representation in elections
across the country. The ideal candidate would have experience with one or
   more of these issues.
   - Communications experience is a plus. As a small advocacy organization,
it is essential that we have an effective media presence. Prior experience
in media and communications is a plus to add to the capacity provided by
   other staff.

*WORK ENVIRONMENT*:

   - We work in a small space with lots of staff interaction – we are at
our best when we speak together frequently and can constantly learn from
one another. We host frequent waves of interns and fellows who add to our
diversity of perspectives and experience and bring a great deal of energy
and new ideas to the team. It’s a joyful and fun place to be because our
   work is so exciting.

*SALARY AND BENEFITS*:

   - Salary will be commensurate with experience and is expected to be
comparable to salary for other senior staff. We offer traditional benefits
involving health care, commuting assistance and relocation assistance (if
applicable). After one year, employees qualify for a retirement plan.

*APPLICATION PROCESS*:

   - Applicants will be considered on a rolling basis, with initial
applications reviewed the week of June 30th. To apply, please email a
detailed cover letter explaining your qualifications and interest in the
position, along with a resume, writing sample and contact information of
two professional references, to our human resources address:
