[EL] IMPORTANT Election Law listserv housekeeping item

List members,

We have been having trouble in recent weeks with some subscriptions to
the listserv. The problem is mainly for people with *AOL and Yahoo*
addresses but we also have had intermittent problems with people with
addresses from *MSN, Hotmail, Comcast, and FEC.gov*. If you have one of
these addresses, read on.

I don't fully understand the technical details but here's my best try.
Thanks to changes in settings at the servers running the email addresses
above, some of the servers have been treating some email messages coming
from the election law listserv as spam. In response, those servers are
generating error messages which are bouncing some people with these
addresses off the listserv---or at least making it impossible for some
list members with these addresses to post.

There are no good solutions right now on our end. We could change a
setting which would result in the "sender" of the email being the
listserv rather than the listserv member's name. This would make it
hard to identify the sender of messages. That's not a viable solution.
So any solution will have to come from your end.

If you want to avoid this problem, you could have email for the list
sent to a different email address. (You can use the email sent on the
first of each month with instructions on how to modify your subscription
to change your email to this new address. There is no need to
unsubscribe and resubscribe to the list.)

Another possible workaround is to set up a free email account (say with
Google, which has not yet had this problem). You could make this your
listserv subscription address. You could set those emails to forward
messages to your old account. One problem with this is that when you
post to the list you would have to post from the new address.

When we see a flurry of bounced email subscriptions we are manually
adding those people back to the list and will continue to do so. But
some of you may fall through the cracks and you will need to keep an eye
if listserv messages suddenly stop appearing in your inbox. If that
happens please check in with me.

I am sorry for this inconvenience. If we develop a technical solution
on our end I will let you know.

Rick
