Birmingham News
<http://www.al.com/news/birmingham/index.ssf/2014/09/alabamas_voter_id_law_blamed_f.html>:

The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund is alleging that at
least 282 ballots in the state's June 3 primary election were not
counted due to Alabama's law requiring voters to show a valid photo
    identification card.

    In a letter dated today
    <http://www.naacpldf.org/document/alabama-photo-id-2014090314-ltr-ldf-ala-secy-state>to
Jean W. Brown, the Alabama Secretary of State's chief legal adviser,
the group raised concerns about disenfranchisement associated with
the identification law during the primary election --- the first
    statewide contest with the requirement.

"Native language speakers win voting rights lawsuit against state"

Alaska Dispatch
<http://www.adn.com/article/20140903/native-language-speakers-win-voting-rights-lawsuit-against-state>:

A federal judge in Anchorage ruled Wednesday that the state
Elections Division violated the U.S. Voting Rights Act by failing to
provide ballot and candidate information in Native languages to
Yup'ik and Gwich'in speakers in three rural regions of Alaska. In a
big victory for Native rights advocates, U.S. District Judge Sharon
Gleason rejected the state's assertions that it had done enough in
Southwest Alaska and the Interior by providing bilingual poll
workers and "outreach" personnel. Gleason said the state's effort
failed to provide "substantially similar" information in Native
languages as it does in English, a requirement of the Voting Rights
Act since 1975.... Gleason read her ruling from the bench, citing
the urgency of resolving the matter with the general election just
two months away. The nine-day non-jury trial concluded July 3....She
only ruled on claims with a direct effect on the election, and said
she would rule later on another: an assertion the state
intentionally violated the constitutional rights of Native language
speakers on the basis of race or color.

NYT<http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/04/us/politics/voting-restrictions-are-key-variable-in-midterm-elections.html?ref=politics>political

early voting will have on voter turnout (so not necessarily a "key

Miami Herald
<http://www.miamiherald.com/2014/09/02/4323299/high-court-weighs-campaign-cash.html>:

When Lanell Williams-Yulee began running for a Hillsborough County
judgeship in 2009, she signed a letter to would-be supporters
    seeking contributions for her campaign.

Now, five years later, Williams-Yulee's letter could spur the U.S.
Supreme Court to wade into a First Amendment debate about whether it
is constitutional for Florida and other states to bar judicial
candidates from personally soliciting campaign contributions.

Williams-Yulee's attorneys have asked the U.S. Supreme Court to take
up the issue, after the Florida Supreme Court in May rejected
arguments that the ban is unconstitutional and found that
Williams-Yulee violated a code of conduct.

Liberals may blame conservatives for the ongoing surge of political

are now taking full advantage of these secretive, free-wheeling

/Dallas Morning News
<http://www.dallasnews.com/news/politics/state-politics/20140902-abbott-defends-raid-on-houston-voter-registration-group.ece>:/

Attorney General Greg Abbott said Tuesday that his office's
investigation of a Houston voter registration group that netted no
prosecutions but left the organization in tatters was justified.

The 2010 investigation, which included an aggressive raid, targeted
a group called Houston Votes, which was accused of voter fraud....

/The News /reported Sunday that the investigation was closed one
year after the previously unreported 2010 raid, with no charges
filed. But the funding for Houston Votes dried up, and its efforts
to register more low-income voters in Harris County ended.

Its records and office equipment never were returned. Instead, under
a 2013 court order obtained by Abbott's office, they were destroyed.

The raid coincided with a local tea party group's allegations of
widespread voter fraud and the testimony of Fred Lewis, the
president of the nonprofit parent group of Houston Votes, in the
trial of former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Sugar Land.
