Spencer Haywood was finally elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame this morning, a long overdue choice. "The greatest college basketball player ever" (well, at least according to the legendary coach Hank Iba) led the U.S. to Olympic gold in 1968, when players such as Lew Alcindor, Wes Unseld, and Elvin Hayes boycotted the Olympics.

Relevance? Even after the unknown freshman from Trinidad CC made the team (the first teenager ever to do so) he almost couldn't go because getting a passport was a problem. Haywood was born in rural Mississippi in 1949 and had no birth certificate or even a record of his birth. The State Department ultimately issued a passport on the basis of handwritten notes in his mother's family bible.
