Hi everyone,
I am helping guide a seminar next week for a Columbia Journalism School
class, focusing on Citizens United and its impact on politics.
Most of the students are from other countries without First Amendments,
so they are fundamentally perplexed about the role of money in our
political system and the long and complicated history of efforts to
regulate that money.
I would love any suggestions you might have for a reasonably
non-technical (and reasonably neutral, from an intellectual standpoint)
primer on the history of campaign finance regulation from Buckley forward.
It is something I would hand out along with some examples of journalism on
the topic.
Would also welcome suggestions for a more technical journal article or
academic publication, so long as it could be followed by a graduate seminar
in journalism.
I have some ideas on both fronts but would welcome more.
thanks all,
Nick
