[EL] what are good, recent books that describe the usefulness of political parties worldwide?

I will appreciate hearing suggestions about a pro-political party book that is aimed for a general audience.  I want to recommend it to some friends who think that political parties are intrinsically bad.  My strong impression is that social scientists who have studied political parties find them useful and even necessary, not so much in the U.S., but worldwide. Richard Winger
