Hello all,
I'm a longtime lurker on this list, and I recently took a position as
managing editor of the television archive at the San Francisco-based
Internet Archive (though I'm based in Denver).
In early December we'll be premiering a new project to find and index
political TV ads in key early 2016 primary states, as part of our
Knight-funded project, 2016 Political TV Ad Tracker: with Analysis &
Fact-checking Citizens Can Trust
<http://blog.archive.org/2015/07/22/2016-political-tv-ad-tracker-with-analysis-fact-checking-citizens-can-trust/>
.
We're going to be generating piles of downloadable metadata on how often
ads run, where they run, on what stations, etc., and we'll also have
editable, embeddable video clips of ads available. We'll be monitoring TV
in these states starting two months before each election, so first come
Iowa and New Hampshire.
Meanwhile, we're flexing our muscles on the way to launch. Less than
24-hours after polls closed Tuesday, we used audio fingerprinting for
algorithmic discovery of San Francisco TV political ads in 35,000 hours of
programming, Aug 25 - Nov 3. We found that two minutes out of every three
aired was an anti-prop F ad:
Pro-Airbnb advertising dominated recent political TV ads in San Francisco

We're hoping the data we collect will prove useful to folks on this list.
Please don't hesitate to send feedback about the work we've done so far,
and let me know if you have any questions about the project. I'll let the
list know when we launch. My contact email at the Archive is:

Thanks,
Nancy
