Cleveland Voting Rights Institute Training
April 6, 2016
12:30 PM - 04:00 PM

Event Location:
Squire Patton Boggs
4900 Key Tower 127 Public Square
Cleveland, OH 44114

Details:
The Supreme Court's 2013 decision in Shelby County v. Holder effectively nullified a key provision of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, the most effective civil rights law ever enacted. As a result, until Congress amends the Act, voting rights litigation will be the only path available to minority voters seeking to protect their rights against discriminatory voting laws.

Help respond to this voting rights crisis by joining the American Constitution Society, the Campaign Legal Center and Georgetown Law Center in a half-day training program, taught by some of the most respected voting rights practitioners in the country.

This training will arm attendees with the tools and tips necessary to become active members of the voting rights bar, and will provide an opportunity for new and returning members of the voting rights community to meet and strategize about the challenges to come. We need you to be part of the next generation of voting rights defenders.

This training will provide an overview of voting rights law including Section 5: Shelby Couty v. Holder, Section 2: Voter ID & Redistricting, and recent challenges to Ohio's voting laws and current voting rights litigation. We will also cover race & voting, litigation strategies, photo identification cases, and careers in election law and voting rights.

Featuring:

  * Gerry Hebert - Executive Director and Director of Litigation at the Campaign Legal Center. Gerry was previously the Acting Chief of the Voting Section of the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, where he served as chief trial counsel in more than 100 voting rights lawsuits, many of which were ultimate decided by the US Supreme Court.
  * Leah Aden - Assistant Counsel, NAACP Legal Defense Fund. She joined LDF's staff in February 2012 as a NAACP LDF Fried Frank Fellow and her work includes representing Black people in a variety of legal actions, including challenges to discriminatory voting measures under the Voting Rights Act, the U.S. Constitution, and state laws.
  * Donita Judge - Project Director and Senior Attorney at the Advancement Project. Donita has extensive expertise in fighting ballot suppression measures in Ohio and nationwide. She frequently testifies before congress and speaks on national television about voting rights issues.
  * Don McTigue - Managing Attorney, McTigue & McGinnis LLC. Don has been referred to as the "Gold Standard" in Ohio election law. He is the former Chief Elections Counsel to the Ohio Secretary of State and the former Counsel to the Ohio Elections Commission.
