[EL] question regarding Trump replacement on ballot

I received the following e-mail inquiry earlier this morning, and I thought
perhaps someone on this list might be able to provide an answer that I can
pass along?

What would happen if a candidate became seriously incapacitated and
permanently, say, a month before the general election?

The party would nominate a replacement candidate, but how would states
handle the issue of a ballot on which the deceased nominee's name still
appears? Do states have laws dealing with such a circumstance? Would the
votes cast for the deceased nominee automatically accrue to the new nominee,
even though the new nominee's name is not on the ballot?

In the present circumstance, it's too late to get Trump's name of the ballot
in a great many states, but if the RNC were to replace him, would the
replacement get votes cast for Trump in those states where Trump's name
would be on the ballot in November?

I mentioned to him what happened with Carnahan in 2000, and that each state
probably has different laws on the subject, but that was all I had to offer.
Anybody know if there's been a state-by-state assessment of how this would
play out?

Thanks.
